Q. My son wears headphones all the time, listening to music, gaming, watching videos. Should I be concerned about his hearing?
A. Video games, phone calls, streaming movies, and listening to music are all reasons more people are wearing headphones for longer periods of time every day. Without a doubt, sending sound directly into the ears can damage your hearing: the volume and duration of use can both play a role. As a rule of thumb, if others can hear a child’s music / audio when he or she is wearing headphones or earbuds, the music is too loud. If used above 50% of possible volume for more than 30 minutes, permanent hearing loss may be at risk. Parents and other adults should also lead by example, adopting these same guidelines.
